Classical & Common names:
   Ayurvedic: Apaamaarga, Chirchitaa, Shikhari, Shaikharika, Adahshalya, Mayura, Mayuraka,Kharamanjari, Kharapushpaa, Pratyakpushpaa, Aaghaat, Vashira, Kihini. 
    Unani: Atkum (Arabic), Chirchitaa, Latjeeraa. 
    Siddha: Nayuruvi.

    Widely is known throughout the tropical and subtropical regions.
Medicinal activity: 
   The plants contain the alkaloids achyranthine and betaine. Achyranthine, a water-soluble alkaloid, is reported to dilate blood vessels, increases the amplitude of respiration and lowers blood pressure. It also showed diuretic and purgative action. The presence of ecdysterone is also reported in the stem and leaves
Uses:
       Sushruta used alkaline ash of the plant for promoting the growth of normal tissues after surgery; thick aqueous extract as an ingredient of massage cream for ulcers; internally for skin diseases; as an ingredient of a medicated salt in rheumatism, internal tumour, cough, piles, intestinal parasites. The herb proves very potent for stimulating digestion, cures anorexia. It overcomes the troubles due to worms and pathogenic organisms.
Dosages:
         28–56 ml decoction (KAP)
Contraindications, Interactions, and Side Effects:
        Estrogenic activity dampens potential as interceptive contraceptive (ZUL). LD50 (aqueous root extract) = 7.16 ml/kg ivn rat (HH2).
Warning: 
    Contraindicated during pregnancy.
